The Charleston Ballet, the official West Virginia State Ballet, was formed in 1956 by Andre Van Damme. Mr. Van Damme achieved great success in his native Belgium as the first star dancer with the Royal Opera. His vision was to provide state experience in a professional atmosphere for West Virginia dancers and to create a greater appreciation for the art of ballet.
The company has been a pioneer among regional ballet troupes in the United States. For five decades, the civic troupe has enriched the cultural life of West Virginia, performing hundreds of traditional and original ballets. Known for its artistic integrity and discipline, the ballet also has been one of the most socially responsible groups in the community.
Tickets are now available for the Charleston Ballet’s performance of “PLAY BALL!”
This ballet will celebrate the opening of baseball season in the spring. Lively and playful, this definite crowd pleaser pays homage to the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League of 1943. The choreography presents a “what if” look at what might have happened if the men’s and women’s teams ever competed in an exhibition game. Whether you love ballet or baseball, our “9 inning” ballet gives you guest choreographer Christopher Fleming’s rendition…. complete with bats, balls, peanuts and pointe shoes!
VALSE MYSTERE and GAMES will also be presented to complete this spring performance with many male guest dancers from Columbia Classical Ballet and BalletFleming. An exciting evening of entertainment for the whole family!
